School News: Destination Imagination team finishes 6th in state

Dolores Middle School students at school last Friday gave a cheer in front of the school as four students left for a state competition. Sarah Cochrane, Zenda Olson, Courtney Corbitt and Tayonna Gallegos then boarded a small bus with their coaches and headed to Denver for the state Destination Imagination competition.

The team headed into the competition with a near-perfect score at regionals and had high hopes for the state competition. In the end, the team walked away with a sixth-place finish.

Coach Sandi Corbitt was pleased. There were 22 teams from some big schools, she said.

The team was acknowledged for their effort at an award ceremony Saturday night.

Destination Imagination helps students develop creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The four eighth-graders who went to state competed in an improv category, during which the students rely on their acting and quick thinking.

Prom dresses shared

Dolores Student Leaders in Community Service students had a great idea this week, by having a pre-prom fashion show. On Wednesday, students gathered to model their old formal gowns that they only wore once, and other students bid on them. It was a fundraiser for the DSLCS and also got some once-worn gowns out of closets and some great deals. Prom will be May 3 this year. The Great Gatsby is the theme.

Theater group returns

Mark April 25 on your calendar and get ready to be wowed as the re-formed Dolores High School and Middle School Theatre group puts together their first production. "Who's Crazy Now?" will have its opening night on April 25 at 7 p.m., followed by two showings April 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show will then take a weeklong break and be back on May 9 with a 7 p.m. show and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. shows on May 10.

The play is set in an insane asylum, where a group of teachers have lost their minds trying to teach their students. It should be a great time.
