Semipro football coming to town

New Mexico Miners set to host Grand Junction

Generally speaking, the Dolores High School football field does not see much game action between October and September.

On April 26, however, exciting action will return to the field however, when the New Mexico Miners play the Grand Junction Gladiators in a semipro football showcase.

Serving as a fundraiser for the Dolores High School football program, the game will match two of the area's top teams, while featuring four local players and a local head coach.

Among the locals participating in the matchup will be Donnie Todd, Dane Guttridge, Cody Meyers and Richard Killingbeck.

The Miners are coached by longtime youth football coach Ed Guttridge, who, prior to accepting the head coaching position with the Miners, aided in the development of youth football programs in Cortez and the surrounding area.

A lifelong football coach and fan, Guttridge explained that he, along with the vast majority of Minters' players, share a common love of the game.

In addition to offering players the opportunity to participate in the game that they love however, semipro football can aid young players in launching careers.

"Semipro is a great avenue for athletes that maybe need another year or two to mature," explained Dolores High School football coach Chris Trusler, who previously owned a semi-pro team. "Sometimes, you've got a guy who is trying to play at the next level and (semi-pro) is a good middle ground."

Scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m., the game feature players between the ages of 18 and 45.

Proceeds from the game will go to the Dolores High School football program to help defray costs of summer camps and equipment.

All fans interested in witnessing plenty of hard-hitting and exciting football are encouraged to attend.
