Nowlin plans to work with Dolores

Contract may include mounted patrols

Montezuma County Sheriff-elect Steve Nowlin gave Dolores town board members an update of his plans.

Dolores contracts with the sheriff's office to provide law enforcement coverage for town. This year, the contract was for $150,000.

"I'm concerned about some of the expenses in the contract," Nowlin said.

The board decided to wait until Nowlin took office in January before negotiating a new contract.

Nowlin also said he would work with Dolores on choosing which officer will mainly cover town.

"I'll provide officers for the board to interview to determine the best fit for the Dolores assignment," Nowlin said.

Another idea Nowlin is exploring is setting up mounted patrols for town.

"It works in other towns and is a form of effective community policing," he said.

The steeds would come from horse rescue organizations. Nowlin said officers with riding experience have already expressed interest.

"I think horse patrols would bring a certain comfort level back to Dolores," said trustee Ginger Black-Swope. "It's retro, the kids would love it."
