Rat owner attacked with a bat

Smith

A 53-year-old Dolores woman reportedly "went crazy" last week and attacked a former roommate with a baseball bat.

The Montezuma County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residential disturbance on County Road 25.3 just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 19.

In a two-page report, a deputy noted that Sylvia Smith, the homeowner, attacked two female victims, age 35 and 54, hitting and kicking them before assaulting them with a baseball bat. She also smashed the automobile of another eyewitness with the bat.

According to authorities, the 35-year-old victim had gone to the residence to retrieve some of her belongings. The following day, a deputy escorted her back to the scene for a civil standby.

In another report, deputies noted that the younger victim had lived at the residence in exchange for caring for the homeowner's animals. The women reportedly became close friends.

Currently under a court-issued restraining order, Smith was arrested and charged with two counts of third-degree assault. Records reveal Smith is out of custody under bond.

The victim also reported damaged or missing property, including a lost rat, valued at more than $850.
