Cowboy music coming to Mancos

The Western Music Association Colorado Showcase/Jam will be Saturday, May 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mancos Library. It's free, but donations will be taken.

From Mancos, yodeling cowgirl Lynne Belle Lewis and cowgirl poet Lindy Simmons will be featured artists. From Cortez, baritone Mark Baker and working cowboy Tim Krebs will offer more yodels. Four performers from outside Montezuma County will round out the program.

Complimentary cake, coffee and water will be available.

Archaeologists discuss Petrified Forest

The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society presents William Reitze at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St., Cortez.

Reitze will discuss "The Petrified Forest National Park Boundary Expansion Project: Re-assessing Occupation and Land Use in El Desierto Pintado." He will discuss archaeological research on the expanded Petrified Forest National Park, including preliminary results on several recently discovered, large Basketmaker sites.

Site-surveying class available at FLC

Assistant State Archaeologist Kevin Black will teach a class on "Basic Site Surveying Techniques" from May 29 to June 1 at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.

The 25-hour course is part of the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification, and is open to the public. The cost for the class is $12.
