Dolores interviews two principal candidates

The public met two candidates being considered for the Dolores High School principal position this week.

On Monday, Charles Tracy met with students and teachers. Tracy worked his way up from a classroom teacher to the position of middle/high school principal. He has been a teacher in Kansas, and is currently the principal at the American School of Tampico, in Tampico, Mexico.

"I've been in education for 23 years in the U.S. and Mexico," he said. "I have been interested in international education because it brings in more ideas and experience."

He has been a successful coach in high school athletics, primarily as a women's softball coach. Outside of school, Tracy enjoys fly fishing, playing the guitar, woodworking, cooking and traveling.

Tracy has two children, one who is in elementary school.

"I had a good vibe in Dolores, and would love to relocate my family back to the States," he said. "My leadership style is to work as a positive coach with students, teachers and parents towards improving education."

On Tuesday, Jenifer Hufman visited the school. Hufman is from the Oak Creek, Colo. area where she is currently the principal at Soroco High School. She has 22 years experience in education, has a teaching degree from Adams State, and has two school-age children.

Hufman said she is very community minded, and likes to get to know her students, recognizing their lives on and off campus.

"I don't spend a lot of time in the office, because there are no kids there," she said. "I love school sporting events, and will wave to my students in the grocery store and talk with them and their parents at the county fair."

Hufman prefers small communities over larger cities, and realizes that while data and testing are important, the numbers don't tell the whole story.

"There are great things happening in small communities across the nation," she said.

The new principal will most likely be named by the end of this week, check doloresstar.com for updates.
